Law: Graduate Training Contracts

Training Contracts

We are currently recruiting for training contracts starting in September 2021, for graduates who have completed their LPC. We like to recruit our future lawyers as early as possible and we are proud to state that a number of our current associates and senior associates started their law careers as trainees.

The structure of a training contract at MJ Hudson is unique:

  • Our trainees are given large amounts of responsibility and exposure from early on.
  • There are five core practice areas, as well as the possibility of going on secondment or to another law firm to undertake a litigation seat. We will expect all trainees to complete a seat in the M&A, Private Funds, Venture Capital and either Tax or Hedge practice areas.
  • Whilst you will be predominantly working in your allocated practice area during your seat, you will also be able to work for other practice areas as required.
  • The open-plan office is designed to help juniors build strong relations with more senior colleagues and to encourage collaboration and skill sharing across the Company (COVID dependent).
  • Trainees are offered specialised support, in-depth training on basic and technical skills, as well as continuous encouragement and guidance in developing their brand.
  • Trainees are required to undertake their PSC at the beginning of their training contract at one of our preferred providers.

What We Offer

Successful candidates will rotate every six months and will provide support to each of the fee-earners in a wide range of corporate matters in the Private Funds, M&A, Venture Capital, Hedge Fund and Tax sectors.

As a trainee, you will be given the chance to get involved in real client matters with the above teams, to develop a genuine sense of life as an MJ Hudson lawyer. You will work with experienced lawyers including partners and associates while having fantastic opportunities for networking and socialising.

About the Group

MJ Hudson is an asset management consultancy, listed on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange.

Specialising in alternative assets, we work with both well-known and emerging teams, helping launch new firms, new funds and new services. Once they are launched, we provide flexible support to help them operate more efficiently and deliver better returns to their stakeholders. MJ Hudson has invested heavily in data, technology, and analytics, allowing us to provide real time insights to our clients, helping them optimise everything they do.

From our London headquarters and our offices across Europe and North America, our team of over 200 professionals works for many of the world’s most significant investors and managers.

We started as a law firm, but now our services also include regulation, fund administration, ESG (responsible investing), investor relations, investment consulting, research, and analytics.

Working at MJ Hudson, you will get more exposure, more quickly to one of the world’s most significant and fast-growing industries.

Our culture is what differentiates us – working at MJ Hudson means working with interesting, intelligent people from diverse backgrounds. We pride ourselves on being a community that brings a collaborative spirit to the workplace.

MJ Hudson has an approachable and inclusive culture with an emphasis on wellbeing. We understand that one of the biggest assets of any organisation is its people – that’s why we want to ensure that the wellbeing of our team is not just good, but excellent. We have a well-established wellbeing initiative, the Recharge Plan, which includes its own dedicated mental health initiative, MARBLES.

Our initiatives are always being updated to incorporate fun and unique wellness trends along with feedback and ideas from the team. For example, in 2018 we introduced the Step Count Challenge as a MARBLES initiative, which saw 30 employees compete over some fantastic fitness prizes.

The Recharge Plan was introduced to assist employees with all aspects of mental and physical wellbeing. The plan has many popular offerings such as massages, yoga, mindfulness, boot camp, aRRt club, time out lunches and healthy breakfast.

We take wellbeing so seriously, that the Recharge Plan has its own billable code so any time spent (maximum 8 hours per month) participating in the Recharge Plan contributes to annual billing targets.

To assist employees further with their physical health we also offer Cycle to Work schemes and have a corporate partnership with Fitness First.

At MJ Hudson, we recognise that diversity makes for good business as it stimulates more ideas, opinions and perspectives. We are committed to the maintenance of a professional inclusive environment that recruits, retains, develops, remunerates and promotes all of our people regardless of gender, race, nationality, marital status, sexual orientation, age, religion or beliefs or disability. In short, we embrace diversity as fundamental to the promotion of our company’s values and recognise that diversity and inclusion has an invaluable influence on MJ Hudson and all that we aspire to be.

We are in the process of implementing a formal initiative to help recruit, retain, coach and mentor women into senior management positions. We recognise that working to keep the best talent, which includes supporting women through the executive pipeline, is the best way that we can retain our market competitiveness. We are also working with universities on graduate recruitment to try to recruit more females to the alternative asset industry in the first place.

In line with this, we seek to support our female employees as much as possible by encouraging shared parental leave and offering company pay for maternity leave for up to 26 weeks and full pay for paternity leave for qualifying employees.

We actively encourage and support female employees back into work by offering phased return schemes for new mothers, as well as mentoring programmes for those who want it. We also offer flexible working practices to staff, such as working from home and flexi-hours.

Hudson’s Heroes is a Company-wide group that is dedicated to making positive changes to society. Every year, the Company selects a charity to volunteer with so that the team at MJ Hudson has the opportunity to help society in a unique way.

The team at MJ Hudson believes that giving back to the community in this way not only benefits those that we help, but strengthens the company’s friendly and integrative culture. If you’re interested in finding out more about Hudson’s Heroes and the work that they do, please visit the Hudson’s Heroes webpage.

Life at MJ Hudson

Every day, our clients put our blend of commercial experience and entrepreneurial creativity to the test. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Our team of lawyers provides legal advice to asset managers, institutional investors and advisers on all aspects of asset management and M&A. Alongside more traditional asset classes, we cover the full gamut of alternatives, including private equity, venture capital, hedge, real estate, infrastructure, energy and credit.

We pride ourselves on giving employees outstanding opportunities from the start of their career, including giving paralegals and trainees levels of exposure and responsibility that are rarely encountered at other corporate law firms.

‘I joined MJ Hudson back in 2012 and became the firm’s first trainee solicitor. Since then the firm has grown a great deal and I am pleased to say that it has managed to retain the same down to earth and friendly culture. The work is interesting and varied and you receive excellent training and support to help you grow as a lawyer. The team is very hard working but such hard work is noticed and appreciated.’ – Megan Lau, Associate.
